Having trouble installing a theme or plugin? You’re not alone – many GPL plugins and themes require a few extra steps to work perfectly.
Here’s a quick step-by-step guide you can follow for most products:
Installing a Plugin:
If the plugin asks for a license key, you can skip it or click “Activate Later” – most GPL plugins still work fully.
Installing a Theme:

Here’s a quick step-by-step guide you can follow for most products:
- Go to WP Admin → Plugins → Add New
- Click “Upload Plugin” and select your .zip file
- Click Install Now then Activate
- WP Admin → Appearance → Themes → Add New → Upload Theme
- Select .zip and install
- Some themes require the “child theme” and demo content import – check our notes on each theme download page.
Troubleshooting tips:
- Use PHP 8.1 or higher
- Set upload_max_filesize to at least 64MB in your PHP settings
- If upload fails, use FTP or File Manager to manually upload into /wp-content/plugins/ or /themes/
